My name is Amanda. I am a life-long resident of the North Shore, currently calling Two Harbors my home. I know this area inside and out and have a deep love for Lake Superior. Even deeper than my love for this area, is my love and passion for pregnancy and birth.
Even since I was a little girl, I've felt a calling towards birth work. It was while I was studying Public Health Education at UMD, that I learned what a doula was and finally had a name for what I was called to do. I started my training in the summer of 2014, and earned my certification through DONA in the spring of 2016.
I believe that every woman and family deserves quality, respectful, and nurturing care during this important time in their lives- no matter what "type" of birth you are planning. Every birth is beautiful in its own way, and I want to support you on that journey. As your doula, I will encourage you to trust your body and your instincts, because you ARE strong, powerful, and capable.
Barbara Katz Rothman said that, "Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers -- strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." I believe this statement fully, and it guides the work I do supporting parents in growing their families through birth.
In addition to my Doula training through DONA International, I also have training in overcoming trauma and in Circle of Security. I have a BS in Psychology and more than fifteen years experience working as a childcare provider.
With this background, I really gravitated to helping the parents overcome any insecurities they had as they were still learning to be parents. Birth work felt like a very natural transition. Now I get to participate in the magic of birth and help families adjust to their new life. I'm also particularly passionate about postpartum support, as I think this is a very important, and often, vulnerable time for new parents.
I have a wonderful husband, three cats, two sugar gliders, and a small tortoise. We've lived in Duluth for almost a decade; I grew up in Superior. I love getting outside, gardening, hiking, camping, building things for the household, and spoiling the cats. My husband and I are in the process of becoming foster parents.
